The problem with socialism is that it breeds a feeling of entitlement and that entitlement breeds waste. In Canada people waste the money we put into Health care, they don't have to pay for it, it is free. So, people in the system waste millions. They use emergency rooms instead of going to the doctor's office. They don't try to take care of their health because they don't have to. And hypochondriacs have a field day. That is the problem of socialism. people are lazy, and they don't appreciate the gifts involved. In order to keep costs down, governments start to make decisions. Some doctors until recently had salary caps, so the best of the specialists suddenly only worked 9 months of the year. They earned up to the cap and stopped working. My Dad needed a new knee. He was 85. too old. He exercises regularly eats only organic food, and may live into his late 90's but he is too old to have the surgery, the government decided he doesn't need to walk at his age. Our hospital just started a whole new renovation project it will take at least a year. In january 2007 they start construction of a new hospital, it will open in 2008. The one they are renovating will be torn down. No one says why renovate a building you are going to tear down, it is free, that is the problem with socialism, no one sees the costs. If you took your entire income for 2 1/2 months could you afford to pay for healthcare? That is what every working Canadian pays for health care 2 1/2 months wages.
