He traveled to Iraq several times during the 1990's where he worked with Iraqi Public Health officials in making a study of the alleged casulties from the sanctions. This is likely where he met Riyadh Lafta, whom he passed on to Les Roberts. It looks like Lafta was the primary figure involved in both the sanctions and the post-war casulty studies.

And no, this wasn't done in secret.
