Everybody's a victim...even Mr. Foley__

Foley to name suspected abuser 54 minutes ago

MIAMI (Reuters) - Disgraced former U.S. Rep. Mark Foley (news, bio, voting record) will identify the Roman Catholic priest who he says abused him sexually as a young boy, his lawyer said on Tuesday, calling it part of the ex-lawmaker's "healing process."

Attorney Gerald Richman said Foley, who is gay and resigned from Congress on September 29 amid revelations he sent sexually explicit messages to young male congressional aides, would identify his suspected abuser to the Archdiocese of Miami so the church "can then deal appropriately with the issue."

Soon after Foley's resignation, his attorneys said he had been a victim of sexual abuse committed by a priest while he was growing up in Florida.

Speaking at a news conference in West Palm Beach, Richman said Foley, 52, who unleashed a scandal that threatens Republican control of Congress in the November 7 elections, had no intention of pursuing criminal charges against the priest he blames for his decades-old abuse.

"We're talking about issues that happened 36 to 38 years ago. This is all part of the healing process for Mark Foley," said Richman.

"He thinks it's important to go ahead and bring this information out ... and encourage other people who have been similarly abused to go ahead and come forward."

The Miami Archdiocese, which includes Foley's hometown of West Palm Beach, could not be reached for comment.

Foley, who entered a rehabilitation program for treatment for alcoholism soon after resigning, has said through his lawyers he never had sex with minors
