I'm thinking that with Shutterfly's strong seasonality, taking a position before the earnings report would be a good short term gamble.

Why? I'm thinking a better gamble would be after these (my guess not great) Q3 numbers are out because...

"We [Shutterfly] have periodically experienced operating losses since our inception in 1999, and we make investments in our business that generally result in operating losses in each of the first three quarters of our fiscal year to enable us to generate net income during the fourth quarter."

Would Shutterfly therefore not lose (invest) the most in Q3 in order to gain (earn) the most in pivotal Q4?

Or am I missing something extra -- Q3 positive surprise wise -- because of the IPO?
