On some measures it is going well. It is getting lots of attention and the topics for discussion just keep pouring in. I would consider it a failure if either LW or RW members began to feel disadvantaged in their freedom to express themselves. There are plenty of RW dominated threads and plenty of LW dominated threads. If I can't keep some sort of fair balance, I might abandon the idea.

The goal of the thread is to lift the standard of rational discourse to a more noble level. That isn't easy. I even had to ban myself once. Hopefully we can come back and keep trying after having a bad day. To some extent, I have given more benefit of the doubt to people who hold positions oppositional to my own than I have given to people who may think them selves on my side. I'm doing that for now to try balancing my natural tendancy to favor similar others. I have received emails from people (who in the past have identified them selves as my adversaries) saying that they appreciate the balance that has been achieved so far.

I am inviting people to submit their points of view and positions regardless of how provocative that may be and no matter how offensive it may seem to other members. I've had my feelings hurt more than once. One challenge is to rise above that in your response to the offending post, by not attacking the person who submitted the information.

Through thorough and civil discussion, we have shown that we are able to flush out all view points and differences. Once we accomplish that, there is usually little left to discuss on the original premise, so unless there are new points of view, we move on from the bone well chewed. No need for personal attacks ever. That is the idea behind the thread.

You may present your point of view and back it up with as much substance as you can muster. Everyone who is willing and able may counter that with other points of view.

Once that is done we can either move on or degenerate into the less honorable personal attacks. The latter of which is not what we are there for.

From the header: "... with out being mean to people who have different points of view?

The members of this thread are not among the topics of this thread."
