And this is how we evolved to home grown Jazz.

"Jazz is an original American musical art form originating around the start of the 20th century in New Orleans, rooted in Western music technique and theory and marked by the profound cultural contributions of African Americans. It is characterized by blue notes, syncopation, swing, call and response, polyrhythms, and improvisation. Jazz has been described as "America's Classical Music," and started in saloons throughout the nation."

Rough,

We look at the likelihood of reproduction as one factor.

Yes, I can see this for larger populations where strangers meet strangers. However, I was thinking about very small populations of tribes intermingling with other tribes – starting around 3 or 4 thousand years ago, or further back.

I don't think we need to go back into ancient history to see the effects music can have on evolving culture.

I already accept the large component that music plays in our modern cultures. I’ve been interested in how these features first crept into our value systems. We certainly value music now. We seem to be open to new styles when we’re younger in the same way we are open to language when we are first learning to speak. As we age, the templates are set and we may not accept some of the more radical changes in musical styles.

Does singing ability signify health?

There are spring bucks that leap high into the air to show their vitality to any potential predators. There is a bird species that will sing when pursued by larger birds to show their vitality. I’ve read of a theory that suggested that the ability to sing (well) represented a sign of health, in the same way that physical/facial symmetry does. This is something that we are attracted to because of its (supposed) indication of fertility, vitality or fecundity.
