Chip equipment maker ASML's profit triples, tops forecast

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- ASML Holding , Europe's largest microchip-equipment maker and a rival of Canon and Nikon , said third-quarter net income more than tripled to 172 million euros ($215 million), with sales up 80% to 958 million euros. The company booked 95 systems, including 88 new ones, during the quarter. Analysts had expected a profit of 154 million euros on revenue of 920 million euros from the Veldhoven, Holland-based company. It's expecting fourth-quarter bookings of 65 units -- "with upside potential" -- and said in 2007, the anticipated pause in lithography purchasing by the flash memory segment could be offset by the ramp-up of its new product, the XT:1900i immersion system, and by steady gains in ASML's market share.
