Chartered considering second 12-inch fab, say sources

Claire Sung, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 18 October 2006]

Singapore-based pure-play foundry Chartered Semiconductor is said to be considering constructing a second 12-inch fab in an attempt to extend its business scope beyond CPUs, according to industry sources.

Chia Song Hwee, Chartered president and CEO declined to comment on the speculation.

The strained capacity at Chartered's only 12-inch fab (Fab 7) is said to have motivated the foundry to assess the construction of a second 12-inch fab, the sources said. Chartered is expected to back up AMD, its main client, on the migration to 65nm. Chartered started manufacturing AMD64 CPUs on 90nm process at Fab 7 from July 2006 and the transition to 65nm is scheduled for the middle of 2007.

While orders from AMD is expected to continue growing, foundry orders from other clients, including Infineon Technologies and Nvidia, should also put pressure on Chartered's available capacity.
