"I understood in the states you could always get care in an emergency ward."

This is kind of a myth really. It's true that anyone can walk into an emergency room and get treated, but what do you think this means?

You don't get continued care for chronic conditions, unless you're DYING from them. Emergency rooms are triage centers, treat the "emergency" and get the peatient OUT of there ASAP. At best, you might be given a an unaffordable (without insurance) prescription and a few sample pills. You're still BILLED, at very high emergency room rates, for whatever treatment you receive.

It's not FREE, just often unpaid. If the person receiving the treatment has an address, the hospital will attempt to collect the money, up to and including turning the matter over to professional collectors.

If a hospital admits you in, then they are responsible for fixing you up before releasing you. So many hospitals go through elaborate loops to make sure emergency rooms will not even look at anyone without proper insurance.

A few years ago in LA a 12-year old black kid was the victim of drive by shooting. With his friends' help he walked himslef to the emergency ward of a hospital where he was denied admission pending arrival of the "right" ambulance. He bled to death at the doorsteps.

I bet this does not happen in Canada.
