In fact China fears a nuclear Japan more then anything

and that is why the US needs to very loudly say we have no intention of interfering with the government of North Korea in the foreseeable future. We are not at this time interested in any involvement in this area of the world due to our huge commitments elsewhere.

Then on the phone to China mention that Japan and South Korea are protected by the US, and in the event of an escalation by North Korea, that the US would consider a request for Nuclear protection to be a reasonable one. If this is not done before the election, it should be done immediately after.
