There are lots of reasons to move to consumption taxes, but since in Canada food isn't taxed the poor pay far less consumption tax as part of their income. They do however pay property taxes. and frankly I think a 50% tax rate is completely deplorable. Since you are in the US your mortgage is tax deductable, it isn't in Canada. Our fastest growing industry is call centers, and low wage tourism jobs. Our taxes are too high. It is easy to say that high taxes don't cause homelessness, but any investment by private enterprise has to be paid for with interest. Because of the way we tax property, no one builds inexpensive housing, you cannot pay for it. How do we provide homes for the homeless, if the property taxes on a house are $350.00 a month. As I all the time, and you ignore, tax free day in Canada was July 26th this year. It takes 6 months work to pay the taxes. Lowering taxes in the US where tax free day is in April might not be a solution. In Canada we even pay tax on our bloody taxes. We are paying off the Hydro debt, and we pay tax on that payment. If the Federal Government gives people on welfare a benefit cheque, the province takes the money, but the city is the one paying the welfare. And just like it happened in Britain, our best and our brightest leave the country. We train computer people in Waterloo, the students do periods of on the job training, they work in California. Why? because it is cheaper to produce in California than it is in Canada. Because anyone who is going to make a big salary wants it to be in the US because your taxes are just under 1/2 the rate in Canada. It is easy to sit in a low tax jurisdiction and talk about different taxes. It is different when you know that there are so many taxes that the middle class is being taxed to death. Our homelessness is just behind yours, but our climate is far different than yours. And we are paying half of peoples income to come in second highest for homelessness.
