I appreciate the reassurances, Bill. I just don't trust the government.

That's understandable but this law doesn't make them any less (or more) trustworthy in regards to actions against citizens.

If you think they would violate the law to harm you or to harm other citizens, this law doesn't stop them or enable them, its really irrelevant to that concern.

He would probably do the same with or without it.
