I quit everything late last winter. I was coming home from a small project and the last night we went out and drank home brewed Tequila until 3:00 a.m. and then a flight home at 7:00 a.m. The plane was practically empty and I had three seats to lie across on the way back and for the next two days I was in a fetal position on the floor. When I came out of it I chucked everything, smokes, alcohol, herbs, vitamins, aspirins all went down the sink. It was easy to quit drinking after that - smoking was hard but after a few weeks the desire was gone.
