Hi John,,

Clearly Dell is misfiring, and has been doing so for too long. They really do need a different leader.

Was trying to find a Dell response story, and came across this instead.

Dell's Focus On Share Now Seen In A Different Light

By Edward F. Moltzen, CRN

How focused has Dell been on market share dominance?

In its most recent financial conference call with Wall Street analysts, Dell Executives Michael Dell, Kevin Rollins and Jim Schneider, combined, referred to the company's market share position throughout the world no fewer than 46 times in a one-hour presentation, according to this transcript.

(You can listen to that conference call, held on Aug. 17, here.)

"We continue to take share worldwide, particularly in strategic regions in customer segments, and we intend to balance revenue growth with profitability," said Dell Chief Financial Officer Schneider.

"For the next quarter and the foreseeable future we will continue to balance our revenue growth and profit without giving up share," said Dell CEO Rollins.

"While we gained share in the key markets worldwide and achieved record market share of 19.3% this quarter, we're not satisfied with our performance, and we will do better," Dell chairman and founder Michael Dell said.

The latest market share numbers from IDC and Gartner group show Dell has continued to lose share worldwide and in the U.S.

In the U.S., as these numbers indicate, Dell's PC shipments actually declined year-over-year in the third quarter while Hewlett-Packard, Gateway, Apple and Toshiba actually increased shipments during that time.

Dell's next earnings announcement is scheduled for Nov. 16, when its executives may have a different discussion on its share situation for investors then.

Bomb after bomb, almost a weekly occurrence

Dell, Rollins et al appear to be the poster children for "Asleep at the switch with thumb firmly entrenched in arse" gang.

Perhaps, they spent too much time and resources trying to crush Gateway. It appears they tried to slay the wrong dragon, IMHO.
