As you know, I'm a forester. Forestry has become unpopular, and environmentalists have basically driven public forestry out of business, or at least to minimum.

A great deal of effort has been spent on defending forestry in court. I do not think any of this has been effective, because unlike 35 years ago when foresters were The Good Guys, the profession has lost popular support.

I've known for a long time that unless forestry had friends among artists, poets, and writers, it was doomed to the fate it is receiving now. Unfortunately, too many creative people think that forestry is at best undesirable and at worst evil, despite the fact that they all live in wooden houses like the rest of us. They find it more palatable to paint pretty pictures of wolves.

Ken Brauner paints many scenes that show forestry and logging in a sympathetic light. I told him about my conviction about artists and writers when I corresponded briefly with him, and he understood and appreciated my sentiment. I hope he continues to prosper with his art. I wish I had wall space and money to buy his paintings.
