"Smashed" doesn't equal "lost". The US Navy was smashed at Pearl Harbor but its not like we lost WWII. If your determined enough you can be smashed and still not give up or go away. The losses where huge, and they where enough to greatly reduce the Vietcong's effectiveness going forward.

The Tet offensive wasn't just a military defeat for the communists it was an enormous military defeat. Big enough to have possibly been a turning point in our favor if we had taken advantage of it. But the political situation wouldn't allow that to happen. And its understandable that this was the case. Americans had been told that they are winning, that the communists are on the run etc. Many didn't even believe that an attack like Tet was possible. After these statements turned out to be false they didn't believe the true story (of Tet being a massive military defeat for the communists) when they heard it. Sort of like the boy who cried wold in reverse.
