A Pat Robertson appearance on the "700 club" has more laughs per minute than a typical Jay Leno monologue. And Jerry Falwell makes for a very amusing figure, his three chins quivering, as he outs Tinky Winky from his pulpit. These buffoons are comical, but they are also very dangerous. Falwell's homophobia has inspired acts of violence against gays and lesbians and Pat Robertson's call for the execution of Hugo Chavez didn't do a lot for our international reputation. I see it as my mission to ridicule and expose these charlatans. Most liberals, and perhaps most Americans share my disdain for these evangelical con artists, but I was surprised that the Bush administration also can't stand them. "Tempting Faith" a new book by David Kuo, a former official in the White House "faith-based initiatives" program, is causing the Bush administration a lot of embarrassment. Kuo claims the "faith based initiatives program" was misused to persuade evangelical Christians to vote for Republican candidates. Kuo says administration officials mocked evangelical leaders behind their backs, alleging that in the office of political guru Karl Rove they were called "the nuts." "National Christian leaders received hugs and smiles in person and then were dismissed behind their backs and described as 'ridiculous', 'out of control,' and just plain 'goofy,' " Kuo writes in his book. On a "60 Minutes" interview, Kuo claims that White House officials called Pat Robertson "insane" and Jerry Falwell "ridiculous" Unfortunately, Kuo doesn't name any names -- and this detracts from the legitimacy of his book. However, Kuo comes across as credible, and he doesn't seem to have any axe to grind with any White House official. Televangelists like Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell and James Dobson are drunk with power, they salivate at the prospect of a photo op with the leader of the free world. These con artists may be able to fleece their flocks, but they are children in the hands of a Machivellian monster like Karl Rove. These fundamentalist nuts need to stop mixing religion and politics. They are completely out of their element in the harball realm of politics. They should go back to the softball league of the evangelical world where they can easily fleece their flocks.
