Easier to explain with my old meter with the wheel and dials; this one has numbers. Works the same, easier for me to visualize in real life, and more fun to watch.

When I make more than I am using, the wheel reverses direction and moves backwards. When I consume more, it moves forwards, like everyone is probably used to seeing. I liked watching all those dials moving backwards; I think I moved the 1000KW one.
Billing is for a period of a year. My year didn't start until Sept, cuz it took them about 2 months to put in the meter, instead of 15 days. (But the bill for those 2 months was zero.)Grrr. If you have a positive number, you pay. If you have a negative #, you have a negative #. No carry over to the next year. No little embossed gold plated letter from the prez of PGE thanking me for the gift, even. Just a negative number.

When I first had it, I'd watch the wheel when it was barely creeping in either direction. Then I started doing things like turning off the stereo and just using TV sound for the TV news, and watch how that affected the wheel. Damn little wheel made me get real gung-ho about making it stop or reverse.
