If for example, the Federal Government were to borrow $100 billion to build a hydrogen infrastructure that would eliminate our dependence of foreign oil...

The idea that the US need for foreign oil could be eliminated by the government spending $100bil on hydrogen infrastructure, isn't very realistic.

It's also the only way to fast track the shift from oil - the private market economy would take decades to effect such a change.

Any attempt to make the change in less than decades would be a very very bad idea. "Fast tracking" the change leads to massive costs, and likely massive wastes as one solution is quickly imposed by government fiat rather than letting the market find the most efficient solution.

I wonder where this near infinite faith in the ability and competence of the Federal Government to do ANYTHING comes from. Certainly not from experience. Experience should tell you if they tried this it would end up as a $100 billion boondoggle disaster.

A hundred years ago if the Federal government had had the hubris, and enough true believer voters to give it the political right, and executives of the Stanley Steamer company had known the right Senators and Congressmen to bribe, it might have selected steam power as the preferred and anointed technology of the future to drive our growing transportation needs. And development of the internal combustion engine would have been delayed decades.

Bureaucrats have an uncanny ability to pick the wrong technology. Review the history of Japan Inc's waste of billions of tax dollars on the analog HDTV system.
