Barron's has an interesting analysis of the upcoming 2006 elections. They look at campaign contributions as an indicator of grass roots support.

Given how polarized the Republican vs. Democrat divide is, I would love to see what swing voters are doing. My guess is that swing voters don't give to political campaigns, because they don't have enough invested emotionally.

With respect to polls, the only polls that really matter (aside from the poll booths) are the ones that manage to interview actual voters.

Personally I don't respond to polls anymore. They take way too long.
