If Germany didn't invade Russia during WWII, things might have been a lot different. But the country were in a lot of debt with limited resource in its territory. USA is a vast country with a lot of resources ... still.

TJ, when things are so bad, owning things, including gold, even carefully stored in your teeth, is not much use. When there are no bars between you and the wild-eyed murderous chimps, a stash of gold is not much consolation [though, if stored overseas, it could be used to bribe one's way out - hand over some in exchange for relatives, more in exchange for more, and the last in exchange for Sophie's choice of who to rescue].

As I suppose you are suggesting, owning land is not much use when the chimps can just walk onto it and take it over. Gold is portable.
