The problem with Iraq was seen as a problem of over stretch

What about a failure of morality, courage and intelligence. Morality on the part of the Neocons, BigOil, the Bush family et al, courage on the part of the Democrats, Powell, the professional military and intelligence on the part of the American public who is still acting in incredibly stupid ways.

It's not good enough or remotely moral to say that Iraq would be fine if Bush hadn't failed militarily to squash dissent, chaos and civil war. There was no justification for the US to unilaterally (dragging toy poodle Blair) topple Saddam which is, of course, evident in the Bush administration's constant lying about why we're in Iraq.

This particular tree was rotten from its planting which makes all of its fruit poisonous.
