it surprises me that many people disapprove of Miss Vermette's approach to motivating kids to enjoy math.

My experience was in a three-grade combo in Watts Bar dam, Tennessee in 1941. My High School grad teacher put the best five of her 1st grade readers behind a screen in one corner of the room every day for an hour and had us read from a book until we missed a word. The first one though their book got a new book awarded. I won most of the books.

And no, I didn't have to walk to school. We took the bus and had a free lunch in a basement each day which always included turnip greens. That's where I learned about the "4G's of Southern cooking." Grease, grits, greens and gravy.
