more whacko goppers on the loose "As a congressman, William Dannemeyer had a bit of reputation for being out there -- well now, he's out there for convicted killer Scott Peterson, saying the former Modesto fertilizer salesman was wrongly convicted of killing his wife, Laci. "I believe a grave injustice has been done. An innocent man is in prison and condemned to die for a crime that he did not commit,'' Dannemeyer, a seven-term GOP congressman who left office in 1993, wrote in a Sept. 20 letter to state Attorney General Bill Lockyer. Dannemeyer, 77, who lives in Fullerton down in Orange County, thinks Peterson was the victim of sensational journalism and a Modesto Police Department that zeroed in on him and ignored evidence that the killer may have belonged to a satanic cult. Dannemeyer said his belief in Peterson's innocence is based on the book "Presumed Guilty'' by Matt Dalton, a onetime member of the Peterson defense team. "This is all about justice and proof," Dannemeyer told us. "I believe there is a satanic cult operating in this state, and I think that law enforcement has a responsibility to investigate." To spread the word, Dannemeyer sent copies of his letter to each of the state's 58 district attorneys and each of the state's 58 sheriffs via "restricted mail" at $8.50 a pop, which comes to $986. "Sometimes,'' Dannemeyer said, "you have to just spend the money because it's the right thing to do."
