I see the most likely scenario is that of learning how to conduct a close to western standard of living using less and less energy as time goes on, at least per capita. Examples of this are already happening. For example the compact florescent bulbs. they gove roughly the same quality of light for about a fifth of the energy used.

And as the cost of energy rises commensurate to it's scarcity, waste will be stripped out of our systems, which I think will be a good thing. For example I think people will figure out ways to commute less. They wil live in smaller spaces. Local agriculture will become more focal. I see some of these trends happening already, and I think they will continue.
