You should see Dick Proeneke's story. I've seen it on VHS. He went to Alaska at age 59 and built a cabin and lived there for years. He built everything himself, including the handles for his tools, which he brought without handles.

I can only marvel at the energy and creativity of the man. Here's where you can get the program. It appeared on PBS some time ago. dickproenneke.com
