Until you posted that recipe, being a midwesterner, the only thing I knew to do with dates was to make fruit cake. After you make fruit cake, who will eat it? It will be brought to a swap for the worst Christmas present received that year..or the next... Erma Bombeck had a theory there was really only one fruit cake in the whole US, it was just handed from house to house. You know, regifted.
