mass delusion?? or perhaps that is what they were taught. Hard to tell. I wasn't around when SS started so I don't have a personal sense for how it was billed. I don't think that the original SS message was bogus but I remember the trust fund contrivance and it was bogus from the get-go. As for delusion, I don't think there's any excuse for anyone with an IQ and attention span greater than that of a gnat to not know how it works. My sense is that the people with whom I spoke needed for it to be their money because otherwise they would have to acknowledge to themselves that they were effectively on the dole, an intolerable condition. Since then, however, the entitlements have become so great and so common that there's no longer shame in being on the dole. It is no longer disreputable.
