Hello K,
As you surely know, kinetic energy is steadily lost as the electrons move down a wire. The wire get's a little hot. So we can't transport the energy from Arizona to, say, Chicago without losing most of it. I'm all for saving the planet, doing without oil etc. but in the real world I'm afraid that the long term solution has to be the decrease of global population. Hopefully it won't be done violently but who knows?
