My big dog stayed in my back yard, inside the privacy fence. I had a manual transmission and occasionally coasted downhill into my driveway. If rattled the gate he sounded like he wanted to kill me, and had the size to make the possibility real. The house behind mine had a yard a few feet higher than mine.

The rocks appeared to have come from my neighbor's yard, and his sons were the right age to have been responsible. I never accused them of throwing rocks at my dog, even today.

One nice thing about my dog. When the neighbors' balls ended up in my yard, the doorbell would ring while they inquired about the where abouts of the dog. If I said it was ok to get their ball or Frisbee, they would grab it quickly and make sure to close the gate.
