I grew up poor, too, but with middle class values. That makes a difference.

John, we was so poor we didn't even have rocks. When it was time to do laundry, we'd take our clothes down to the creek and beat'em with our heads.

John,
we would buy a roast and it would last till thursday, friday forget perhaps a fish with fat over it. sat always franks and bean. then the roast again. Now that's familiar... fish sticks every Friday.. About 4 times a year we'd have scallops instead.. two or three each.. real tiny ones.. but they were soooo good. Beans and weiners ... on toast.. Creamed salmon on toast... Stretch one little can a long way.. Not much variety... I never thought we were poor.. We never went without food or shelter, santa brought us clothes too..no matter how good I was.. My mom was making 25$ a week at the telephone company... two kids and a husband in school.. My mother ? now she WAS poor growing up.. somehow though she ended up getting educated at a convent.. a lucky break.

Oh and Klic and Kam for sandwhiches... (Canadian SPAM) or Paris Pate... a little can of what looked like cat food spread on your bread.. Don't want to know what was in it..

Things improved a lot though by the time I was 10.
