I don't think I'm stretching the word too much to use it in the way I do. What else would one call a publicly controlled currency which is unbacked by any objects, or promises by governments to back it by taxation and military power? I don't consider "Madness", "Stupidity" or "Fool's Go-d", useful words in this context.

My use of "currency" seems right. dictionary.reference.com I have no idea why you have a problem with it.
