re: The cost (at least in financial terms) of getting entirely off oil in 15 years would make that figure seem tiny.

We only have to reduce oil consumption by 60% to be independent.

re: Not in the 15 year time frame AS proposed. Quite the opposite, the cost would massively exceed the benefit.

Crap. Energy efficiency is THE INDUSTRY of the near future.

re: Any serious attempt at "oil independence" within the next 15 years isn't worth what we would have to spend to get there. The attempt would be massively expensive, it would most likely be unsuccessful, and even if successful it would be less beneficial than you seem to think it would be.

It simple and relatively cheap. The stimulus of the extra dollars will boost the economy. And most importantly, we can't afford not to.

What specifically do you think is so expensive?

YOu are hopeless. It's a good thing you aren't a CEO. You'd constantly be complaining about having to spend in R&D, and say that it's not worth the cost because you can't get enough return on your investment in the next week to justify the costs. What a joke.

Massive investment to get off of oil? Yes, I agree. Worth every penny within two decades. From a financial standpoint, absolutely. Worth every penny from a national security and environmental standpoint within one decade? Absolutely.

You should read that article John Fowler posted from Friedman on the rise of petro-authoritarianism being directly correlated to the rise in the price of oil. Maybe you'd start to get it then. But when you head is buried in the sand, it's hard to pull it out, isn't it?
