>> You obviously never heard the expression "Thank God for Mississippi", did you ?

No I hadn't, but I looked it up. Interesting. Thanks ;)

>> As for this freedom of speech rap - the fact that journalists have been jailed is by far not the main problem in the US.

I agree (to an extent). I happened to be looking up some old posts and I came across one of yours that I replied to. Somewhere along there (either just before or just after) there was a post about how Bush was handpicking the WH press corp and reading from script. The argument had been that a president who would really respect the right of the people to know would not have shied away from a couple of hard ball questions. It reminded me of how Bush was using safe zone to push back all protestors so far away as to be beyond camera view wherever he went. Someone who believed in freedom of expression would never do that.

>> The main problem is that our freedom of press and speech has been cynically and systematically exploited by Right Wing assholes in this country in the form of Fox Fictional News and that ilk.

I fully empathize, but I don't know how this can be remedied. If you have a suggestion, I am all ears...time and again I come back to the issue that the only lasting solution is to ban politicians from accepting corporate campaign contribution (or any out of party contribution for that matter).
