Japan mobile number portability draws little interest: survey
There is little interest among Japanese consumers in the just-introduced mobile phone number portability system, a survey showed Friday.

Internet-based research firm Macromill Inc. conducted the survey for two days to Thursday among 1,600 mobile phone users aged 15 or older across Japan. Valid respondents were received from 1,030 of them.

Only 5.4 percent of the respondents said that they wanted to use the system, which enables users to keep their numbers when they change phone companies. This was down from 6.9 percent in the previous survey, conducted ahead of the system''s introduction on Tuesday.

The low figure suggests that consumers want to watch future moves by mobile phone operators, at least for now.

Of those interested in the system, 43.6 percent said that they would shift to Softbank Mobile Corp., while 30.9 percent said that they would move to KDDI Corp.'s au brand. Industry leader NTT DoCoMo Inc. was named by 9.1 percent.


Softbank's growing popularity follows the company's newly announced price plans that make voice calls and e-mail between subscribers free in principle. (Jiji Press)
