The Alaska lifestyle I experienced was not materially different than most life styles (other than being able to see mountain goats from my front porch, and so forth), because I lived in Juneau, a city of about 30,000. Within hailing distance, however, and certainly most of Alaska, the life style is very much attuned to subsistence living and remote environments.

In Haines, which might be comparable to the town depicted in Northern Exposure, you could see moose on the streets and eagles in the trees. Local radio had community service announcements like "Hey Charlie, you have some mail at the post office. Better come and get it."
