Veterans have major issues with Bush-Cheney and the rightwing now. Back in 2003-2004 it was less so because veterans actually believed Bush-Cheney cared about the military and knew what they were doing. Now it's clear Bush-Cheney don't give a damn about vets and are the worst most incompetent commanders in chief in history. With Bush-Cheney in charge we don't even need enemies. So 2003-2004 is irrelevant to today. Kerry would beat Bush by 20% these days, and would win on all defense related issues.
