Any reduction of oil use by the US of 60% (or more considering US oil production is going to decline, and considering that absent other changes US oil use will likely continue to go up) is likely to include a slowdown of the American economy. That reduction of growth won't just be an instant thing but something that compounds over itself for awhile. Any particular investment in some other solution pushed by the government may not be a truly efficient way to solve the problem. The investment might wind up not having large returns or even being wasted. Look at the synfuels boondoggle. What benefit have we gotten from those billions?
