re: The reasons for the 2006 wave talk: a) the huge generic edge by Democrats over Republicans in current party preference, which never has been a good predictor of House elections; b) the mood inside the Washington Beltway, also a poor predictor historically; c) the run of bad news for Republicans and the Bush Administration; and d) unpopularity of President George W. Bush and the Iraq War.

It's all about the independents. The Republicans have a much superior machine than the Dems at getting out their (roughly equal) base. The generic poll numbers you see are all about the dissatisfied independents favoring a change to the Dems. But will they be motivated enough to step out of character and actually vote in a mid-term election?

Last nite, the news said there are 47 million single women between the ages of 21 and 40. Of that number, only 27 million vote. So yeah, there are a lot of people who are unhappy with Congress but also don't believe in the democratic process or feel they are too busy to participate.

BTW CNN is running a series called Broken Gov't. For the first time since I've watched CNN, they are taking off the gloves.

BTW plus: the splintering you are hearing is the stock markets taking a much needed cratering after the GDP came in lower than expected this AM.
