Acer: Strong 4Q sales leave minor chances to source more notebook components
Celia Lin, Taipei; Esther Lam, DigiTimes.com [Wednesday 25 October 2006]

Acer sees that notebook sales are much stronger than expected this quarter, and component inventories in channels are almost "zero," said company chairman JT Wang at the celebration of Acer's 30th anniversary.

Wang projects quarterly shipments in the fourth quarter to jump by 20% on quarter, and he also expects the strong uptick to persist through the first quarter of 2007. Global notebook shipments have a chance to grow by 30% on year in 2006, although industry players earlier projected a 20% on-year shipment growth.

In December, the order visibility for Acer remains as strong as in November, as opposed to a shipment gap usually seen between these two months after peak shipments in November. With components in short supply, Acer is now seeking for as many as components as possible, being prompted by buoyant sales, Wang stressed.

When commenting on the inventory pileup that driven from the previous price competition between AMD and Intel, Wang said that "discipline" should be resumed in 2007. The competition between these two CPU giants is now not that fierce as before, he indicated.
