Well said, Commander,....however in regard to this snippet:
>>>>The street is littered with companies who thought they knew better than anyone else.<<<<

....I might add that the world is witness to many country failures who thought their governance was superior to the management practiced by their producers....for example, USSR?

I personally favor as much unfettered free enterprise as is consistent with the growth and perpetuation of personal freedom, as opposed to virtual relinquishment to control by a so-called benevolent all-wise government.

re XOM's earnings

XOM is toast if they can't grow production with $60 crude. What did you see that i didn't. XOM'e earnings are stellar
From XOM's earnings release I read that XOM's production is up roughly 5% YoY:
Oil-equivalent production (koebd) (1) 4,007 3,737 4,241 3,99

This was accomplished spending only 1/3 of cash flow for Capex. Compare this to some of the thread favorites like COP. What is their organic growth rate? They spend about 100% of their cash flow in Capex over the last few years but i still do not see great organic growth, if you even out all the acquisition related growth. Exxon bought Mobil for something like 4$/barrel in the ground and COP spend 3.3 per MCFE of gas (a record price) for BR. Who is smart and who is stupid? I don't own either XOM nor COP but just gaging by the numbers XOM looks like the best managed major oil company by far. I wish CVX (which i do own) could put out numbers like that. They could pay 5$ dividend/share, grow production 4-5% YOY and buy back some stock on top of that. CVX would trade at around 120$ if that were the case. You bet I would not complain.

Bill Gates didn't develop DOS, he bought it. That's what XOM is gonna' hafta' do if it wants to increase reserves.
