Well, Mq...Maybe that was the way in your village, but pretty certain it wasn't in mine....My 2 greatgrandparents lines start with birth dates about the 1810-1845 era....I'd have to go look to be positive....but here in this country in the early New England villages, early birth records, AND early church records were pretty clear as to who was begat by whom....Remember the Scarlet Letter? People were quite happy to tell others if there was something "amiss"..... Many European (especially the Swiss) birth records were pretty good as well, as well as the early christening records and marriage records.

BUT one thing you are right about is that DNA is here to stay, and certainly will be able to sort many things out..... Read
Dr Brian Sykes of Oxford England, who wrote "7 Daughters of Eve" discussing many things...I've read that his research and work has become the "standard". I don't know that is true, but the book is most interesting!
