Landlubbers usually get maritime analogies wrong. "Changing
course" is not cowardice; it's the sensible thing to do if the ship is headed for the rocks.


You might reasonably say that things aren't going well in Iraq, but "heading for the rocks" might not be an accurate description, both in that it implies a massive disaster not just problems and lack of success, and that you (or Dyer) seem to be implying that pulling out will mean no problems, when it may make the problems, but for Iraq and for the US, worse.
