Problem with generic polls is that results are only applicable to a hypothetical 'generic election' --- and there *ain't* no such animal.

(But the emerging story about Republican prospects this particular year probably has a lot to do with voter fatigue after *years* of one Party control... a disproportionate number of Republican seats up for reelection... dismay at a broad number of problems: the downward spiral in Iraq, massive federal over-spending, wage stagnation, a public sense that the aims of a smaller and less intrusive government have been abandoned, etc.)
