A fellow Chinese student of mine once remarked to me how the Chinese communist party (CCP) think they own the country and that no dissent is allowed. Perhaps it will do the CCP some good to read these words of Theodore Roosevelt.
On a second thought, perhaps I shouldn't be too harsh on the CCP dictators. Some of us think the same here in the good ole US of A.

Like you, I'm ready to bring to an end this discussion. I apologize to the board for posting content which was INTENDED to generate more cooperation directed TO our government in its effort to provide for the security of our nation....instead it sadly has released a virtual torrent of treasonous commentary (I'm not including yours in this category)...far more than I thought this board would produce. I guess the age of responsible patriotism during wartimes has been lost, beginning back in the 60's.

Just a couple of parting comments, with which I think you could feasably agree. You wrote:

>>>>That might be your preference, but people get to make their own decisions as to how they express their dissent.<<<<

You are right in that they "get" to make their own decisions, but those decisions are not always right, especially if the decider intentionally or irresponsibly exercises them to the detriment of the effort to defend or secure the protection of the nation. Can't we agree with that premise? (no need to answer....we're shutting this down, aren't we?)

Now to Teddy. I must admit that I have not studied him in depth, though I perceived him to be one of our better presidents, and admired him. It's easy to misinterpret his statement and conclude that he actually condones treasonous behaviour by the American citizen:

>>>>...that there should be full liberty to tell the TRUTH about his acts, and this means that it is exactly necessary to blame him when he does wrong as to praise him when he does right. Any other attitude in an American citizen is both base and servile.<<<<

Notice the word TRUTH...I think that is key, and I would assume that he would consider UNTRUTHFUL criticism that aids the enemy as treason, especially if that is the intent of the accuser. And I will now criticize him for carelessly not pointing out the danger of avoiding criticism which aids the enemy....I'd wager that he would gracefully accept my critique in this regard.

Again:

>>>>Nothing but the TRUTH should be spoken about him or any one else. But it is even more important to tell the TRUTH, pleasant or unpleasant, about him than about any one else."<<<<

TRUTH! I contend it behooves any American citizen to be responsible for the effects that their right to criticize those in charge of conducting the defense of this country...for the effects it might have in regard to aiding the enemies bent on the destruction of our way of life. That seems to me to be a very rational interpretation of Teddy's intended meaning in his statement. Without TRUTH in the dissent and criticism, one is not practicing responsible support to those whose duty it is to defend the nation.

Goodnight,

Buck

kayaker, i suppose you are aware that roosevelt ran against wilson in the 1912 election (against taft too) in a bitter campaign. wilson trashed roosevelt the most in 1916 even though roosevelt was not running, because wilson said hughes was committing suicide anyway. so after the 1916 election of wilson vs. hughes in which wilson's slogan was he kept us out of war, maybe roosevelt in 1918 is making a nice political editorial such as, say, john kerry or al gore might do today.
