Well, I agree with the sentiments, but that's a little radical. I'd say instead, that we pick a year, let's say 2025, by which we should be at a level of oil consumption that matches or is less than our domestic oil production. So right now we consume 20 million barrels of oil per day (mbpd), yet we produce 5 mbpd. So we should target a 1 mbpd reduction of consumption every year between now and 2025. Or maybe conversely, the government puts a cap on how many millions of barrels per year can be imported and reduces that cap every year until 2025, when imports will equal zero.

Either way, that will force a bunch of other measures to meet that goal, such as increased amounts of ethanol in our gas mixture from 10-15% today to more like E85 and E90 (85-90% ethanol). And it will force car manufacturers to sell flex-fuels, hybrids and plug-in hybrids to meet the new, reduced oil consumption requirements.

Again, as I've said a million times before, it is all so doable with a minimum of pain. All we need is the political will. The will of the American people already exists. It's just those idiots on capital hill that don't want to do anything about it.
