Naw, Geoff, the point I was making is that a novel is a novel, not something that necessarily reflects the author's beliefs or personal experiences. I used to tell stories to my neices and nephews, and I'd hate to be held to account for what the knights, princesses and wizards did in those stories. <G>

(It was pretty funny, though, I'd start telling the stories to the kids, and next thing I'd know, all the adults would be in the same room and pretending to not listen.)

If a work of fiction is used to promote some particular point of view, especially in several differedt cases, like Ayn Rand's books, then yeah, hold the author to account. But not for some isolated vigenettes that are just part of a larger story.
