I visited the Pentagon at about that time, and at lunch time, just about everyone in the building was reading Red October. The bookstore said they had to make several special orders to keep up with demand. I was kinda surprised at the noise made about SOSUS (no pun intended...). I thought everyone knew about the chain of hydrophones, even if they hadn't heard the acronym SOSUS. But then again, that goes for several other supposedly "grey" military programs I could mention.
