Yep, I'm just amazed at how many interpretations there seem to be of Islam so detractors have no lack of fodder.. hence

Yes lorne... that is a huge problem with Islam... the lack of one central authority ..... any kooky Tom, Dick or Khomeni with an iota of charisma can start proclaiming and interpret ting anything he cares from Islam it appears... Basically the religion itself is still tribal... Things were pretty bleak when Christianity went through its tribal phase... Now we are in the ecumenical phase :o)

Ironic that Arab culture pre Mohammed was highly matriarchal.. The wife could turf out the husband with ease...

As to Somalis well I new one quite well at one of my clients, smoked like a chimney and liked his beer but went to the Mosque each weekend.. so broad strokes are dangerous..

My daughter was at Canada's Wonderland just north of Toronto (six flags kinda place) on what must have been Somali day (they have special cultural days there like Italian day etc..), anyway she was amazed when so many of them just dropped for prayers in unison... maybe Somalis are more devout in general..

When I do attend Church as I look around the pews whites are quite in the minority. It is not the demographics of my neighbourhood or parish which is pretty well balanced along Canadian overall population lines.. the unifying factor being mid to upper 'middle-class' and at Christmas and Easter there are many more whites.. so I'd speculate that more recent Catholic arrivals are more religious. I imagine that will change but I see it in other friends that are different stripes of Christian also .. (I make the assumption that it is recent arrivals since 25 years ago the roles were quite reversed)
Religious may be the wrong word.. but I'm equating Church attendance with it..

lots of Muslim owned restaurants The restaurant in question is in an area with a broad mix but skewed toward middle eastern.. a lot of Farsi and Arabic signage, but also Korean, Indian and Chinese..
Not far from a large Chinese grocery I go to weekly which in reality is more a Caribbean store as are the clientele (fails SI spellcheck).. The Chinese owners are from the Islands.. That place is a real melting pot.. exotic foods at fair prices...

Lebanese Christians. My dad is vegetarian (well no fowl, red meat, pork etc..) since a bypass 8 years ago so my folks are always looking for good vegetarian fair when they visit from Montréal. Last time they found a Chinese restaurant owned by Muslim Chinese.. No pork dishes whatsoever. As a kid in Montréal I remember a grocery store in China Town (my relatives had a business there) which each morning had two chaps carry a whole roasted pig from across the street where they cooked it.. Man it was tasty and a little bit went a long way... It is hard for me to imagine porkless Chinese food :o)

I'm off..
Gotta get my Dhalias and especially Calla Lillies dug up before we get a hard frost..
