The test is in which direction the folks in the middle are moving. Suppose I am in the middle and post a comment in each camp, possibly challenging an extreme position, possibly just chatting.

Where do you think I am most likely to be banned for that comment?

The answer to this question has moved me in a particular direction. I've found that if you don't stand up for your position, nobody will stand up for you.

And if you don't stand for something, you'll fall for anything. This is the most distressing aspect of our modern society.

" trying to prove that one group of people is more open-minded than another by looking at this one particular ratio is a bit silly. "

I once had neighbor that I suspected did not like me. One day, his dog was in my yard relieving himself of solid refuse; the children were all outside chanting "Go Casey, Go Casey." It was all I ever needed to know about that family. Soon after, their house was repossessed for nonpayment of their mortgage.

You downplay the relevance of indicators that may be more important than you want to admit. I will grant you that the number of peoplemarks on PGWB, and Don't Blame Kerry are probably not as relevant as the peoplemarks on more recent subjects such as Bush 43 and The View from Left of Center. The bans on actively managed subjects are real and relevant.

I will agree with you 100% that they are not as reliable or relevant of an indicator as my neighbor's kids behavior.

"I think you'd have to do an exhaustive analysis of the contents of the posts to really make a determination as to who is more or less open minded."

You probably don't believe polls unless the pollsters strip searched the respondents either. <g> I did not expect to convince you of anything. I did however prove that this is one place where civil discourse can be conducted. If we had tried in on any of those liberal subjects with ratios in the 3:1 range, I might have been banned. As it is, you do not appear to have been banned by our moderator.
